Synopsis/Plot
Detroit is a 2017 American crime drama film directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by Mark Boal. The film is based on the 1967 Detroit riots, which lasted for five days and resulted in one of the largest citizen uprisings in United States history. The story follows a group of African-American citizens who are targeted by the police and the National Guard.
The film opens with the 1967 Detroit riot, which is sparked by a police raid on an unlicensed after-hours bar. The violence quickly escalates, resulting in a five-day uprising that brings the city to its knees. As the violence rages on, a group of young African American men and two white women are taken into custody and held at the Algiers Motel.
At the motel, the group is terrorized by a rogue police unit led by Officer Krauss. The police threaten, beat, and psychologically torture the group in an attempt to get them to confess to a crime they did not commit. The violence reaches a boiling point when Krauss shoots and kills one of the young men.
