Synopsis – What to Expect from “Detour”
Detour is a 1945 American film noir directed by Edgar G. Ulmer and starring Tom Neal and Ann Savage. It tells the story of Al Roberts, a down-on-his-luck pianist who is hitchhiking his way to Los Angeles to reunite with his girlfriend Sue. Along the way, he is picked up by a mysterious and dangerous character, Charles Haskell, Jr., who forces Al to drive him across the country.
The film opens with Al hitchhiking his way to Los Angeles. He is picked up by a mysterious stranger, Charles Haskell, Jr., who forces Al to drive him across the country. Al is initially suspicious of Charles, but soon finds himself drawn into his web of lies and manipulation.
As they drive across the country, Charles reveals his true intentions. He is an escaped convict on the run from the police and is using Al as a decoy. Al is appalled, but feels he has no choice but to comply. Along the way, they pick up a young woman, Vera, who is also being manipulated by Charles.
The trio eventually reaches Los Angeles, but Charles’ plan to evade capture goes awry. Al and Vera find themselves in a desperate situation as Charles’ schemes come undone. With the police closing in, Al must make a decision that could cost him his freedom or his life.
