The film follows Henry as he struggles with his own personal issues – his father’s death, his inability to form meaningful relationships, and his own troubled past. He is assigned to a school that is in a state of disarray, with teachers that are apathetic and students that are unruly and uninterested in learning. Henry’s attempts to reach out to the students are met with resistance, and he finds himself struggling to make a difference.
Meanwhile, Henry’s life is further complicated by his blossoming relationship with a troubled young woman, played by Marcia Gay Harden. He begins to form a bond with her, and it helps him to confront his own issues and start to move forward.
