Synopsis – What to Expect from “Desperate Living”
Desperate Living is a 1977 American black comedy horror film written and directed by John Waters.
The film follows Peggy Gravel (Mink Stole), a wealthy housewife who is forced to flee her home after her husband is arrested for tax evasion. She takes her maid, Grizelda Brown (Liz Renay), and her son, Junior (George Figgs), and they relocate to Mortville, a run-down slum located on the outskirts of town.
At Mortville, Peggy and her family encounter a strange cast of characters, including Mole McHenry (Susan Lowe), a foul-mouthed child-like woman who serves as the town’s mayor, and her husband, Lester (Edith Massey), a grotesquely obese man who runs the local brothel. They also meet Queen Carlotta (Edith Massey), a cross-dressing drag queen who rules Mortville with an iron fist.
Despite their initial reluctance to accept their new home, Peggy and her family soon find themselves adapting to the bizarre lifestyle of Mortville. However, their newfound sense of freedom is soon threatened when Queen Carlotta decides to use the town as a base for her criminal activities. With the help of Mole, Peggy and her family must come up with a plan to save Mortville from the Queen’s tyranny before it is too late.
Desperate Living is a wild and darkly humorous journey filled with outrageous characters and outrageous situations.
