Synopsis/Plot
Set in 1950s Nevada, Desert Hearts tells the story of Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver), a 35-year-old English professor who comes to Reno to obtain a quick divorce. She is welcomed by the friendly and open-minded locals, and soon finds herself in the company of the young and free-spirited casino worker Cay Rivvers (Patricia Charbonneau). The two women quickly become close friends, and Vivian begins to realize that her feelings for Cay are more than just platonic.
As their relationship develops, Vivian is forced to confront her own feelings and the expectations of society. With the help of a sympathetic psychiatrist (Audra Lindley), and the support of her friends, she begins to come to terms with her identity and her love for Cay.
