Synopsis/Plot
Death and the Maiden is a psychological thriller directed by Roman Polanski and starring Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley, and Stuart Wilson. The film is set in an unnamed Latin American country, where a former political prisoner, Paulina Escobar (Weaver), is still haunted by her experiences in prison. After a chance meeting with a doctor, Roberto Miranda (Kingsley), Paulina begins to suspect that he is the same man who tortured her during her imprisonment.
Paulina invites Roberto to her home for dinner, and her husband Gerardo (Wilson) is suspicious of Roberto’s motives. Paulina then reveals to Gerardo her suspicions that Roberto is her former torturer. Gerardo then takes it upon himself to confront Roberto and force him to confess to his crimes.
The film follows the tense confrontation between Roberto and Paulina, as well as the psychological effects of Paulina’s torture on her. As the truth of Roberto’s identity is revealed, the film takes a dark and disturbing turn as Paulina’s inner demons come to the surface.
