Synopsis – What to Expect from “Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father”
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father is a 2008 documentary film directed by Kurt Kuenne. The film is an emotional tribute to Kuenne’s close friend Andrew Bagby, who was murdered in 2001.
The film begins with an introduction to Andrew Bagby, a young doctor who was murdered in 2001. We are then introduced to his close friend Kurt Kuenne, who decides to make a documentary about Andrew in order to create a lasting legacy for his son, Zachary.
The film follows Kurt as he interviews Andrew’s friends and family, and pieces together a picture of Andrew’s life and character. We learn about Andrew’s passion for medicine, his love of nature, and his commitment to his family and friends. We also learn about the events leading up to his murder, and the subsequent trial of his killer, Shirley Turner.
The film then shifts to focus on the impact of Andrew’s death on those closest to him, particularly his parents, David and Kate Bagby. We see their struggle to cope with the loss of their son, and their determination to ensure that Zachary is given the opportunity to know his father. We also see the lengths that they go to in order to ensure that Shirley Turner is held accountable for her crime.
The film ends with Kurt’s letter to Zachary, in which he recounts Andrew’s life and legacy, and expresses his hope that Zachary will grow up to be a man like his father
