Synopsis – What to Expect from “Dear White People”
Dear White People is a 2014 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Justin Simien. It follows the story of four African-American students at an Ivy League college who are faced with a culture of racial discrimination and tension.
The film begins with Sam White (Tessa Thompson), a college radio host, delivering a passionate speech to her listeners about the racial issues on campus. Her words spark a campus-wide debate on race and identity.
Meanwhile, Sam’s friend Lionel Higgins (Tyler James Williams) is trying to fit in as an outsider on campus. He struggles to find his place in the predominantly white environment.
At the same time, Troy Fairbanks (Brandon P. Bell) is trying to make a name for himself as a student leader. He is the president of the school’s only black fraternity, and is determined to make a difference in the campus culture.
Finally, Coco Conners (Teyonah Parris) is a student trying to make it as an actress. She is determined to make it big, but finds herself struggling to make a name for herself in an industry that is mostly dominated by white people.
The movie follows the characters as they navigate the racial tensions on campus and in their own lives. It highlights the struggles of being a minority in a predominantly white environment, and the importance of standing up for what is right.
The movie ends with Sam delivering a powerful speech to her fellow students
