Synopsis/Plot
Dead Poets Society is a 1989 American drama film directed by Peter Weir and starring Robin Williams. Set in 1959 at the fictional elite conservative Vermont boarding school Welton Academy, it tells the story of an English professor who inspires his students through his teaching of poetry.
The story focuses on an English teacher, John Keating (Williams), who arrives at Welton Academy and encourages his students to see poetry and literature in a new light, inspiring them to “seize the day” and make their lives extraordinary. Keating’s unorthodox teaching methods soon draw the attention of the stern headmaster, Mr. Nolan, who fears that Keating’s methods will lead the boys astray.
The students are initially resistant to Keating’sunconventional teaching methods, but eventually come to appreciate his passion and enthusiasm for literature. Keating encourages them to break out of their shells and make their lives extraordinary by embracing the power of words and following their dreams. The students soon form a secret club, the “Dead Poets Society”, in which they recite poetry and celebrate life.
The film ends with the students honoring Keating’s memory by standing on their desks and saluting him with the phrase “Oh Captain, my Captain”. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $235 million worldwide and earning multiple awards and nominations, including an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
