Synopsis – What to Expect from “Dead of Night”
Dead of Night is a 1945 British anthology horror film directed by Alberto Cavalcanti, Charles Crichton, Basil Dearden, and Robert Hamer. It tells five separate supernatural stories, each with a different cast and director.
The first story, “The Haunted Mirror”, is directed by Cavalcanti and stars Mervyn Johns as Walter Craig, a man who is visited by an old friend who has a strange mirror in his possession. When Walter looks into the mirror, he sees visions of a past life in which he was a judge who sentenced a man to death. The man’s ghost then appears and tells Walter that he will be haunted by his crime until he can right the wrong he has done.
The second story, “The Ventriloquist’s Dummy”, is directed by Crichton and stars Michael Redgrave as Maxwell Frere, a ventriloquist who is haunted by his dummy, Hugo. Hugo comes to life and begins to take control of Maxwell’s life, manipulating him to commit a murder.
The third story, “Golfing Story”, is directed by Dearden and stars Googie Withers as Joan Cortland, a woman who is visited by a mysterious stranger who challenges her to a game of golf. She agrees, and soon finds herself in a surreal dream world in which she is forced to play golf against a ghostly
