Synopsis – What to Expect from “Days of Wine and Roses”
Days of Wine and Roses is a classic 1962 drama directed by Blake Edwards and starring Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. It tells the story of Joe Clay and Kirsten Arnesen, a young couple who meet at a party and quickly fall in love. Joe is an advertising executive with a promising career and an eye for the finer things in life, while Kirsten is a naïve young woman who works as a secretary.
The couple quickly become inseparable and soon move in together. Joe introduces Kirsten to the pleasures of alcohol and they soon become alcoholics, with Joe drinking to escape the pressures of his job and Kirsten drinking to cope with her feelings of insecurity. As their drinking escalates, so does their reliance on each other and their relationship quickly spirals out of control.
Joe is soon fired from his job and the couple’s finances become increasingly strained. They are forced to move to a rundown apartment and Kirsten becomes pregnant. Despite their troubles, they continue to drink and their relationship continues to deteriorate.
Eventually, Joe and Kirsten hit rock bottom and are forced to confront the truth of their situation. With the help of a kind doctor, the couple is able to get sober and rebuild their lives. As they struggle to stay sober, they must learn to cope with the consequences of their past and find a way to stay together.
