Synopsis – What to Expect from “Days of Heaven”
Days of Heaven is a 1978 romantic drama directed by Terrence Malick and starring Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, and Sam Shepard. Set in 1916, the film follows Bill (Gere), a poor yet charming Chicago laborer, and his girlfriend Abby (Adams) as they flee to the Texas Panhandle to escape a murder charge. Along the way, they meet a wealthy, elderly farmer (Shepard) who is immediately taken with Abby. The farmer, desperate for companionship, offers to marry Abby and give the couple a place to stay. Bill reluctantly agrees, and the two find themselves in a paradise of wheat fields and sun-soaked days.
But the paradise is short-lived, as the farmer soon falls ill and dies, leaving Abby and Bill his vast estate. With the farmer’s death, the couple is suddenly rich, but the newfound wealth brings with it a host of new problems. Bill and Abby must now deal with the jealousies of the other farm workers, the suspicions of the farmer’s niece, and a looming plague of locusts that threatens to destroy the wheat crop. As the days of heaven are slowly slipping away, the couple must decide whether to stay and fight for their newfound fortune or to flee again and leave it all behind.
