Synopsis – What to Expect from “Dark Night of the Scarecrow”
Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a 1981 horror film directed by Frank De Felitta and starring Charles Durning, Robert F. Lyons, and Tonya Crowe.
The movie tells the story of a small farming community in rural America where a group of vigilantes take justice into their own hands and murder an innocent man they believe to be a serial killer. The innocent man is actually a mentally handicapped man named Bubba, who was hiding in a scarecrow costume in a nearby cornfield.
The vigilantes are led by Otis P. Hazelrigg (Charles Durning), a local farmer and war veteran who is determined to rid the town of crime. He is aided by his son, J.T. (Robert F. Lyons), and a group of other local farmers.
Meanwhile, Bubba’s sister, Marylee (Tonya Crowe), is determined to avenge her brother’s death and sets out to prove his innocence. She is helped by a mysterious figure known as “The Stranger” (Lane Smith), who appears to have supernatural powers and is determined to uncover the truth.
The Stranger and Marylee soon discover that the vigilantes are actually a group of criminals who are using the scarecrow costume to hide their own identity. They also discover that Otis P. Hazelrigg is the mastermind behind the vigilantes and is using them to cover up his own crimes.
