Synopsis/Plot
Dancer in the Dark is a 2000 musical drama film written and directed by Lars von Trier. It stars Icelandic singer Björk as Selma Ježková, a Czech immigrant who has recently moved to Washington state with her young son Gene. Selma works in a factory to save up money for an operation that will restore her son’s vision, but she is soon faced with the harsh realities of factory life and the looming threat of her own impending blindness.
The film follows Selma’s struggle to make ends meet while struggling with her own physical and emotional pain. She finds solace in her love of music and dance, and in her friendship with her neighbor Jeff. When tragedy strikes, Selma is forced to make a difficult decision that will have an enormous impact on her life and the lives of those around her.
