Synopsis – What to Expect from “Daddy Long Legs”
Daddy Long Legs is a 1955 romantic comedy starring Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron. The story follows wealthy American Jervis Pendleton III (Fred Astaire), who anonymously sponsors an orphaned French girl, Judy Abbott (Leslie Caron), to attend college in America.
When Judy arrives in America, she is overjoyed to discover that her benefactor is none other than Jervis, her favorite author in the world. She is determined to find out who her mysterious benefactor is, but Jervis insists on keeping his identity a secret.
Jervis and Judy form a close bond, and he eventually reveals his true identity to her. While Judy is initially taken aback, she eventually comes to understand why Jervis wanted to keep his identity a secret. She realizes that he wanted to give her a chance to make something of herself without his help.
As Judy’s college experience progresses, she and Jervis become even closer, and their relationship begins to take on a romantic tone. However, their age difference and social standing make a potential romance impossible.
Meanwhile, Judy’s best friend, Sallie McBride (Thelma Ritter), is determined to find out who Judy’s mysterious benefactor is. Eventually, Sallie discovers the truth and forces Jervis to make a decision between his feelings for Judy and his social standing.
