Synopsis – What to Expect from “Cry Freedom”
Cry Freedom is a 1987 British-South African epic drama film directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Denzel Washington and Kevin Kline. The film is based on the true story of South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko and his friend Donald Woods.
The film begins in South Africa in 1976, where Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) is a white newspaper editor who is critical of the South African government’s policy of apartheid. Woods is increasingly concerned about the plight of black South Africans and decides to write an article about Steve Biko (Denzel Washington), a prominent black civil rights leader.
When Woods attempts to meet with Biko, he is rebuffed by the police. Woods is eventually able to meet with Biko in secret and the two become friends. Woods learns about Biko’s philosophy of non-violent resistance and his commitment to the struggle against apartheid.
Meanwhile, the South African government is becoming increasingly oppressive and Biko is arrested and imprisoned. Woods is determined to get Biko released and begins a campaign to raise awareness about his plight. He meets with various international leaders and speaks out against apartheid in the press.
Eventually, Biko is released from prison and Woods is determined to help him escape the country. With the help of a sympathetic pilot, Biko is smuggled out of South Africa and Woods follows him to London.
The film ends with a montage of news clips showing the international outcry over Biko
