Synopsis/Plot
Crossfire is a 1947 American film noir drama directed by Edward Dmytryk and written by John Paxton, based on the 1945 novel The Brick Foxhole by Richard Brooks. The film stars Robert Mitchum, Robert Young, Robert Ryan, and Gloria Grahame.
The story follows the investigation of a murder of a Jewish man in a Washington, D.C. hotel room. Three U.S. Army soldiers, Montgomery Monty Montague (Robert Mitchum), Finlay (Robert Ryan), and Keeley (Robert Young), are suspected of the killing. Monty, a cynical and hardened veteran, is the prime suspect. As the investigation unfolds, the truth about the murder and the characters’ motivations are revealed.
The film is noted for its realistic portrayal of anti-Semitism in America at the time, as well as its use of the then-novel technique of flashback to tell the story. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Ryan), and Best Director.
