Synopsis – What to Expect from “Cross of Iron”

Cross of Iron is a 1977 war drama set during World War II. The movie follows the story of a German platoon led by Sergeant Steiner (James Coburn) and Captain Stransky (Maximilian Schell).

The platoon is sent to the Russian front, where they are tasked with defending a bridge against the advancing Russian forces. However, the platoon is soon overwhelmed by the sheer number of Russian troops, and Steiner and his men are forced to retreat.

Stransky, meanwhile, is desperate to win the Iron Cross medal for bravery, and so he orders Steiner to take a small group of men and recapture the bridge. Steiner reluctantly agrees, and the small group of men set out on their mission.

On the way, they encounter a Russian girl, and Steiner is forced to make a difficult decision – whether to save her or abandon her to the enemy.

The small group of men eventually reaches the bridge and successfully recaptures it, but at a great cost. Many of Steiner’s men are killed in the process, and Steiner himself is gravely wounded.

In the end, Stransky is awarded the Iron Cross, but Steiner is given a different medal – the Cross of Iron. It is a symbol of his bravery and the sacrifices that he and his men have made.
