Synopsis – What to Expect from “Cromwell”
Cromwell is a historical drama centered around the life and times of Oliver Cromwell, the English military and political leader who led the overthrow of the English monarchy in the mid-17th century.
The film begins in 1625, with Cromwell as a young man in his twenties, living in the countryside of England. He is a devout Puritan and a passionate believer in religious freedom. Despite his beliefs, Cromwell is forced to serve in the army of King Charles I in the English Civil War. His experiences on the battlefield turn him into a hardened soldier, and he is soon appointed as a commander of the Parliamentary forces.
As the war progresses, Cromwell leads the Parliamentarians to victory over the Royalists. After the war, Cromwell is appointed as Lord Protector of England and Wales. He institutes a series of reforms, including the abolition of the monarchy and the introduction of a new form of government based on religious freedom.
However, Cromwell’s rule is met with strong opposition from some of the more traditional elements of English society. His reforms are seen as too radical and unpopular, and he is eventually forced to resign. He dies in 1658, his legacy of religious freedom and reform still intact.
Cromwell is a powerful and moving film that follows the life and times of one of England’s most influential figures. It is a story of courage, conviction, and the power of faith in the face of adversity.
