Synopsis/Plot
Crazy Rich Asians is a 2018 romantic comedy film directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim. The film stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh. It is based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Kevin Kwan.
The story follows Rachel Chu (Wu), a Chinese-American professor of economics who accompanies her boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. She soon discovers that his family is extremely wealthy and he is considered one of the country’s most eligible bachelors. Rachel struggles to fit in with the wealthy lifestyle, especially when Nick’s mother, Eleanor (Yeoh), disapproves of their relationship.
The film is a celebration of Asian culture and identity in the face of the often-overlooked Asian-American experience. It features an all-Asian cast and showcases the beauty of Singapore. It also touches on themes of family, identity, and acceptance.
