The film begins with Anna Holtz, a talented music copyist, being hired by Ludwig van Beethoven to help him complete his Ninth Symphony. Anna is initially intimidated by the great composer, but soon comes to appreciate his genius and his passion for music. As she spends more time with him, she begins to understand his struggles with his deafness and his deteriorating health.
At the same time, Anna develops a relationship with a young conductor named Anton Schindler, who is also working on the Ninth Symphony. Through their conversations, Anna learns more about Beethoven’s music and his personal life.
As the Ninth Symphony nears completion, Beethoven becomes increasingly difficult to work with, and Anna and Anton must work together to get the symphony finished on time.
Meanwhile, Anna’s own life is going through changes, as she prepares to marry her fiancé, a wealthy businessman. Anna must decide if she will stay with Beethoven and continue to work on his music, or if she will return to her former life.
