Synopsis – What to Expect from “Control”
Control is a 2004 British biographical film about the life of Ian Curtis, the lead singer of the band Joy Division. The film follows Ian from his teenage years to his untimely death in 1980 at the age of 23.
The film begins with a young Ian Curtis as a teenager in Manchester, England in the mid-1970s. He is a shy, introverted boy who is struggling to find his place in the world. He meets a girl named Debbie and they begin a relationship. Ian begins to find solace in music and starts a band with his friends called Joy Division.
The band quickly gains a following and they begin to tour. Ian struggles with the newfound fame and his declining mental health. He is diagnosed with epilepsy and begins to suffer from depression. He continues to perform with the band, but his mental health continues to deteriorate. He begins to self-medicate with alcohol and drugs to cope with his depression.
Ian’s marriage to Debbie begins to suffer as a result of his mental health issues. He begins an affair with a Belgian journalist, Annik Honore. This affair causes a strain on his marriage and his bandmates.
The film culminates with Ian’s suicide in 1980. The film ends with a montage of the band’s music and a tribute to Ian Curtis.
