Synopsis – What to Expect from “Civil War (Or, Who Do We Think We Are)”
Civil War (Or, Who Do We Think We Are) is a 2021 American drama film set in the post-Civil War era.
The story follows the lives of two families living in the small town of Evergreen, North Carolina. The first family is the wealthy, white and conservative-minded Hayes family, headed by patriarch William Hayes (played by Tom Hanks). The second family is the recently emancipated black family, the Smiths, headed by patriarch John Smith (played by Michael B. Jordan).
The film opens with tensions already brewing between the two families, as the Hayes family is fiercely protective of their way of life and their place in the community, while the Smiths are determined to be seen as equals.
The conflict soon escalates when William Hayes’ son, Tom (played by Chris Evans), falls in love with John Smith’s daughter, Sarah (played by Zendaya). The two families are outraged and attempt to prevent the couple from being together, but the two are determined to stay together despite the opposition.
The situation soon takes a turn for the worse when William Hayes and John Smith come to blows in a public confrontation. This leads to a full-scale feud between the two families, with the town of Evergreen quickly becoming divided between the two sides.
The feud soon reaches a breaking point when William Hayes decides to take matters into his own hands and leads a mob of white citizens to the Smiths
