Ruth is soon approached by a pro-life activist, Beatrice (Kathy Bates), who offers to take her in and provide her with a place to stay. Beatrice hopes to persuade Ruth to keep the baby and become a symbol for the pro-life movement. Meanwhile, a pro-choice activist, Norma (Swoosie Kurtz), also takes Ruth in and tries to persuade her to have an abortion.
Ruth is soon caught in the middle of the two sides, with each trying to sway her decision. She begins to take advantage of the situation by using each side to get what she wants. In the end, Ruth makes her own decision and takes control of her life.
