Synopsis/Plot
Citizen Kane (1941) is a timeless classic directed, produced, and co-written by Orson Welles. It tells the story of the life of Charles Foster Kane, a powerful and influential newspaper tycoon. The film follows Kane through his rise to power, his eventual downfall, and his mysterious death.
The film opens with a newsreel montage of Kane’s life, and a mysterious last word uttered by Kane on his deathbed: “Rosebud.” From there, the film follows a series of flashbacks and interviews with people who knew Kane and his story. We learn of his humble beginnings as a newspaper tycoon, his rise to power, and his eventual downfall due to his reckless spending and his obsession with wealth.
Throughout the film, Kane’s relationships with his friends, family, and lovers are explored, as well as his personal struggles with ambition, power, and loneliness. The film also examines Kane’s complex relationship with his second wife Susan Alexander, and his deteriorating relationship with his best friend Jedediah Leland.
