Synopsis – What to Expect from “Circus of Books”
Circus of Books is a 2019 documentary about the life and career of Karen and Barry Mason, a heterosexual couple who ran the iconic Los Angeles gay porn shop Circus of Books for nearly four decades. The film follows the couple’s journey from their conservative upbringing to their eventual acceptance of the LGBTQ community.
The film begins by introducing Karen and Barry, who are living a fairly ordinary life in Los Angeles. They have two children and are trying to make ends meet. One day, Karen is offered the opportunity to manage a gay porn shop called Circus of Books. Initially hesitant, Karen takes the job and soon finds herself immersed in the world of the LGBTQ community.
The film follows the Masons as they try to balance their conservative beliefs with the realities of running a gay porn shop. As they become more familiar with the LGBTQ community, they begin to accept them and their lifestyle. The film also follows their two children, Rachel and Josh, as they come to terms with their parents’ newfound acceptance of the LGBTQ community.
The film culminates with the Masons’ eventual decision to close the shop in 2019, after almost four decades of business. Through interviews and archival footage, the film paints a picture of a family that has embraced the LGBTQ community and found acceptance in a place they never expected.
