Synopsis – What to Expect from “Churchill”
Churchill is a 2017 British historical drama film directed by Jonathan Teplitzky. The film stars Brian Cox as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill during the days leading up to the D-Day landings in 1944.
The film opens with Winston Churchill in the spring of 1944. He is struggling with depression, and his wife Clementine (Miranda Richardson) is concerned for his health. Churchill is also under immense pressure from his political rivals, who are pushing for a quick resolution to the war by way of an invasion of Europe. Churchill is hesitant to commit to the plan, believing that the casualties would be too high.
At the same time, Churchill is struggling with his own personal demons. He is haunted by the memories of the failed Gallipoli campaign in World War I, which he was responsible for, and he is also struggling to come to terms with his own mortality.
Meanwhile, Churchill’s relationship with General Dwight D. Eisenhower is strained. Eisenhower is pushing for the invasion to go ahead, while Churchill is trying to delay it. The two men have different opinions on how to best win the war, and their disagreement is causing tension between them.
Churchill’s relationship with his son Randolph (John Slattery) is also strained. Randolph is a war correspondent, and he is critical of his father’s leadership. Churchill is frustrated by his son’s criticism and the two are often at odds.
The film culminates in the days leading
