Synopsis/Plot
Chinatown is a 1974 neo-noir mystery film directed by Roman Polanski and starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston. Set in 1937 Los Angeles, the film follows private investigator J.J. “Jake” Gittes (Nicholson) as he investigates a case of adultery and political corruption involving the wealthy Noah Cross (Huston) and his daughter, Evelyn Mulwray (Dunaway).
The film begins with Gittes being hired by a woman who claims to be Evelyn Mulwray, the wife of a powerful Los Angeles water commissioner. Gittes follows her to a house in Chinatown, where he discovers that she is not the real Mrs. Mulwray, but an imposter. After Gittes is attacked by a group of thugs, he is hired by the real Mrs. Mulwray to investigate her husband’s suspicious activities.
Gittes discovers a complex web of deceit and corruption involving a secret land deal between Cross and a group of developers. He also discovers that Cross is Evelyn’s father, and that she is trying to protect her husband from her father’s schemes. As Gittes continues to investigate, he finds
