Synopsis – What to Expect from “Children of a Lesser God”
Children of a Lesser God is a 1986 American romantic drama film directed by Randa Haines and starring William Hurt, Marlee Matlin, and Piper Laurie. Set in the deaf community of a school for the deaf in the United States, the film follows the story of James Leeds (Hurt), a teacher of speech and lip-reading at the school, and Sarah (Matlin), a deaf student who refuses to learn speech or lip-reading.
The film begins with James Leeds arriving at the school for the deaf, where he is to be the new teacher of speech and lip-reading. He meets Sarah, a deaf student who is resistant to learning speech and lip-reading. Despite his best efforts, Sarah refuses to cooperate with James, and they eventually clash.
Meanwhile, Sarah and James begin to develop feelings for each other, and James begins to understand the importance of sign language in the deaf community. He begins to teach Sarah and the other students sign language, and Sarah begins to open up to him.
As their relationship blossoms, Sarah begins to learn more about the hearing world, and James learns more about the deaf world. They struggle to communicate with each other, but eventually find a way to bridge the gap between them.
The film culminates in a powerful scene in which Sarah and James perform a duet of a song in sign language. The two come to understand each other and their differences, and their relationship is
