Synopsis/Plot
Child 44 is a 2015 crime thriller directed by Daniel Espinosa, based on the novel of the same name by Tom Rob Smith. The film follows the story of Leo Demidov (Tom Hardy), a disgraced member of the Soviet secret police, as he investigates a series of child murders in Stalin-era Soviet Union.
The story begins in 1953, with Leo Demidov, a former war hero, now serving in the MGB, the Soviet secret police. Leo is assigned to investigate the mysterious death of a young boy in a small village. Despite the obvious signs of murder, the government insists that the death was an accident, and orders Leo to close the case. Leo, however, is unwilling to accept this and continues to investigate.
As Leo digs deeper into the case, he finds himself up against a powerful political force determined to keep the truth hidden. With the help of his wife Raisa (Noomi Rapace), a fellow MGB officer, Leo discovers a pattern of similar murders across the Soviet Union. In his pursuit of justice, Leo risks his career, his freedom, and even his life, as he is forced to confront the harsh realities of a totalitarian regime.
