Synopsis/Plot
Cherry is a 2021 American crime drama film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Nico Walker. The film stars Tom Holland as the titular character, a former Army medic who returns from the war in Iraq with severe PTSD and turns to a life of crime to pay for his opioid addiction.
The story follows Cherry as he embarks on a downward spiral of crime and addiction. After enlisting in the Army, Cherry is sent to Iraq and returns home with severe PTSD. Struggling to cope with his trauma, Cherry turns to opioids to numb the pain, quickly becoming addicted and in need of money to support his habit. He begins robbing banks, with the help of his girlfriend, Emily (Ciara Bravo). As his addiction and criminal activities spiral out of control, Cherry is eventually arrested and sent to prison.
Throughout the film, Cherry is haunted by his experiences in Iraq and his struggles with addiction. The film examines the physical and psychological effects of war and addiction, as well as the difficulty of trying to break free from an addiction. Cherry’s story is told through a series of flashbacks, as he reflects on his life and the choices he has made.
