Synopsis – What to Expect from “Chappaquiddick”
Chappaquiddick is a 2018 American drama film directed by John Curran and written by Taylor Allen and Andrew Logan. The film stars Jason Clarke as Senator Ted Kennedy, Ed Helms as Joe Gargan, Kate Mara as Mary Jo Kopechne, Bruce Dern as Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., and Jim Gaffigan as John Farrar.
The film follows the story of the 1969 Chappaquiddick incident, in which Ted Kennedy (Clarke), the younger brother of President John F. Kennedy, drove his car off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts, killing his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne (Mara). The film focuses on the subsequent cover-up of the incident, and how it affected Kennedy’s political career.
The film begins with Ted Kennedy being driven to the bridge on Chappaquiddick Island. He is accompanied by Mary Jo Kopechne, a young campaign worker for his brother Robert Kennedy. After a night of partying, Kennedy and Kopechne are driving back to the mainland when Kennedy takes a wrong turn and drives off the bridge. Kennedy survives the crash, but Kopechne drowns. Kennedy, in a state of shock, is unable to rescue her.
