Synopsis/Plot
Carol is a 2015 romantic drama set in 1950s New York City. The film follows the story of Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), an older, wealthy woman who is in the midst of a difficult divorce. She meets Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), a young and aspiring photographer working in a department store. Despite their different backgrounds, the two women form a bond and eventually fall in love.
As their relationship progresses, Carol and Therese must contend with the social mores of the 1950s, which frown upon homosexuality. Carol’s husband, Harge (Kyle Chandler), is suspicious of her relationship with Therese and attempts to use her daughter to get her to stay in the marriage. As the film progresses, the couple’s relationship is tested and they must decide whether to stay together or go their separate ways.
The film is directed by Todd Haynes and features a stellar cast, including Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, and Kyle Chandler. The film is a beautiful and heartbreaking story of love and loss, and of two people who must decide whether to follow their hearts or succumb to society’s expectations. It is a poignant and powerful look at the struggles of same-sex
