Synopsis – What to Expect from “Caravaggio”
Caravaggio is a 1986 biographical drama directed by Derek Jarman and starring Nigel Terry as the titular Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.
The film follows Caravaggio’s life from his early days as an apprentice in Milan, through his rise to fame as a successful painter in Rome, and finally his death in 1610.
The film begins with Caravaggio’s birth in 1571, and follows his life through his apprenticeship with the painter Simone Peterzano in Milan, his move to Rome, and his relationship with Cardinal Del Monte. As Caravaggio’s fame grows, so too does his rivalry with the painter Giovanni Baglione.
Caravaggio’s life is further complicated by his relationship with Ranuccio, a street urchin whom Caravaggio takes in as his own son. As Caravaggio’s paintings become increasingly controversial, he is eventually forced to flee Rome.
The film follows Caravaggio’s travels through Naples, Malta, and Sicily, as well as his eventual return to Rome. As he struggles to find acceptance and patronage, Caravaggio is eventually arrested for murder.
The film culminates with Caravaggio’s death in 1610, and a montage of his greatest works. The film paints a vivid portrait of the life and work of one of the most influential painters in history.
