Synopsis – What to Expect from “Call Northside 777”
Call Northside 777 is a classic film noir released in 1948. It tells the story of a Chicago journalist, played by James Stewart, who is investigating a case involving a criminal who was wrongly convicted of killing a police officer over a decade ago.
The journalist, Frank Wilson, is contacted by the mother of the convict, who believes her son is innocent and has been wrongly convicted. She asks him to investigate the case and prove her son’s innocence.
Frank Wilson begins his investigation by visiting the prison where the convict is being held. He discovers that the convict had an alibi at the time of the murder, but the alibi was never followed up on. He then visits the crime scene and begins to piece together the evidence, which leads him to a man named Joe.
Joe tells Frank that he was the one who actually killed the police officer and that the convict, William Cheever, was innocent. He also reveals that he was paid to keep quiet about the crime by a powerful mob boss.
Frank continues his investigation and discovers that the mob boss is in fact the father of the police officer who was killed. He also discovers that the father had been paying off the witnesses to keep quiet about the truth.
Frank eventually confronts the father and reveals the truth. The father is shocked and realizes that his son’s death was a result of his own actions. He then releases William Cheever from prison and helps Frank to get his story published
