Synopsis – What to Expect from “Caesar and Cleopatra”
‘Caesar and Cleopatra’ is a 1945 British Technicolor film adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s play of the same name. The film stars Claude Rains as Julius Caesar and Vivien Leigh as Cleopatra.
The film opens in 48 BC with Julius Caesar arriving in Egypt to bring it into the Roman Empire. He is met by Ptolemy, the young Pharaoh of Egypt, who is accompanied by his sister, the young Cleopatra. Caesar is immediately taken with Cleopatra’s beauty and intelligence and begins to mentor her in the ways of politics and statecraft.
Meanwhile, Ptolemy is plotting to overthrow Caesar. He enlists the help of the Egyptians to fight against the Romans, but Caesar is able to quell the rebellion. Cleopatra, however, is determined to save her brother and Egypt from Roman rule. She devises a plan to get Caesar to trust her and then to use her charm to manipulate him into sparing Egypt.
The plan works, and Caesar is so impressed with Cleopatra’s intelligence and wit that he declares her the new Queen of Egypt. But when Cleopatra learns that Caesar is planning to return to Rome, she is heartbroken. She begs him to stay, but he refuses.
