Synopsis – What to Expect from “Cactus Flower”
Cactus Flower is a 1969 American comedy-drama film directed by Gene Saks and starring Walter Matthau, Ingrid Bergman, Goldie Hawn, and Rick Lenz. The screenplay was adapted by I.A.L. Diamond from the Broadway play written by Abe Burrows.
The film tells the story of a dentist, Dr. Julian Winston (Matthau), who is afraid of commitment and has a habit of dating younger women. He falls in love with his assistant, Toni Simmons (Hawn), who is determined to get married. To avoid commitment, Julian lies to Toni and tells her he is already married. When Toni finds out the truth, she confronts Julian and threatens to leave him. To prevent this, Julian decides to enlist the help of his neighbor and friend, Stephanie Dickinson (Bergman). She reluctantly agrees to pretend to be Julian’s wife, and the plan seems to work until Toni discovers who Stephanie really is.
The movie follows the ensuing chaos as Julian and Stephanie try to keep up the charade and Toni attempts to get to the bottom of the truth. Along the way, the characters learn valuable lessons about love, trust, and commitment. In the end, Julian and Toni reconcile and the trio of friends live happily ever after.
