Synopsis – What to Expect from “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee”
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is a 2007 historical drama film directed by Yves Simoneau and based on the book of the same name by Dee Brown. The story follows the events of the Lakota Sioux tribe in the late 19th century, as they struggle to maintain their way of life amid the encroaching American settlers.
The film begins with the Sioux leader, Sitting Bull (August Schellenberg), leading his tribe to freedom in Canada after the Battle of Little Bighorn. Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., the US government is negotiating with the Sioux for the purchase of the Black Hills. The Sioux are unwilling to part with their sacred land, but the government is determined to take it.
The film then follows three main characters: Charles Eastman (Adam Beach), a young Sioux man educated in the white man’s ways; Senator Henry Dawes (Aidan Quinn), a US senator determined to “civilize” the tribe; and Sitting Bull, who is determined to protect his people’s land and way of life.
As the government’s pressure on the Sioux increases, Sitting Bull reluctantly agrees to a treaty that will allow the US to take the Black Hills in exchange for money and land. But the government’s promises are quickly broken, and the Sioux are soon forced onto a reservation.
Charles Eastman is caught between his loyalty to his people and his desire to help
