Synopsis/Plot
Bullitt is a 1968 American thriller film directed by Peter Yates and starring Steve McQueen. The film follows San Francisco Police Lieutenant Frank Bullitt (McQueen), who is assigned to protect a key witness in a mob trial, Johnny Ross (Robert Duvall). When Ross is murdered and the mobsters responsible escape, Bullitt is determined to find them and bring them to justice.
The film is renowned for its car chase scene, which features a 1968 Ford Mustang GT390 and a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum. The chase scene was filmed on the streets of San Francisco and is considered one of the most influential car chase scenes in movie history.
The film was a commercial and critical success, earning seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound. Bullitt won an Academy Award for Best Film Editing, and McQueen received a nomination for Best Actor. The film has since been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
