Synopsis – What to Expect from “Buena Vista Social Club”
Buena Vista Social Club is a 1999 documentary film directed by Wim Wenders about the music of Cuba. The film follows American guitarist Ry Cooder as he brings together a group of legendary Cuban musicians who had been virtually forgotten following the 1959 revolution.
The film begins with a brief introduction to the history of Cuban music and the Buena Vista Social Club, a popular music venue in Havana in the 1940s and 50s. We then follow Ry Cooder as he travels to Cuba in search of the original musicians who had performed at the club. He meets with a variety of musicians and singers and eventually assembles a group of veteran performers, including Compay Segundo, Rubén González, Ibrahim Ferrer, Omara Portuondo, and Eliades Ochoa.
The film then follows the group as they rehearse and record their album, Buena Vista Social Club. We see them as they develop a unique musical chemistry and bond with each other. We also get glimpses of their lives outside the studio, including visits to their homes and families.
The film culminates with the group’s triumphant concert at Carnegie Hall, where they perform their music for a sold-out audience. As the film ends, the group is celebrated for their accomplishments and the legacy of Cuban music they have created.
