Synopsis – What to Expect from “Brubaker”
Brubaker is a 1980 American drama film directed by Stuart Rosenberg and starring Robert Redford as Henry Brubaker, a new prison warden who attempts to reform a corrupt and violent prison system.
The film begins with Henry Brubaker, a former lawyer and civil rights activist, being appointed as the new warden of Wakefield Prison, a notorious maximum security prison in Arkansas. Upon his arrival, he is warned by the prison’s corrupt staff that he will not be able to make any changes and that the inmates are too dangerous to be reformed.
Brubaker is determined to prove them wrong and begins to make small changes, such as allowing inmates to have radios and televisions in their cells. He also begins to investigate the mysterious deaths of several inmates and discovers a pattern of cover-ups and corruption. He begins to suspect that the prison staff is involved in a conspiracy to keep the inmates in line and to prevent them from ever being released.
As Brubaker continues to investigate, he is met with resistance from the prison staff, who are determined to keep their secrets hidden. Brubaker is eventually able to uncover the truth and expose the corruption, but not before he is forced to confront the violent and dangerous inmates who are determined to keep their secrets hidden.
In the end, Brubaker is able to bring about real reform and justice to the prison system, proving that even the most hardened criminals can be redeemed.
