Synopsis – What to Expect from “Broken Blossoms”
Broken Blossoms is a silent film released in 1919. It follows the story of a young Chinese man, Cheng Huan, who travels to London in search of enlightenment and peace. Upon arrival, he meets a young girl named Lucy, who is living in a violent and abusive home. Cheng Huan takes pity on her and offers her shelter in his small shop.
The two become friends and Cheng Huan teaches Lucy about Eastern philosophies and the beauty of nature. Unfortunately, Lucy’s father, Battling Burrows, finds out about their relationship and is enraged. He begins to violently abuse Lucy and Cheng Huan steps in to protect her. Battling Burrows eventually finds them and a violent altercation ensues, resulting in Cheng Huan’s death.
As a result of Cheng Huan’s death, Lucy is overcome with grief and guilt. She withdraws from society and becomes a recluse, refusing to leave her room. Eventually, she is able to find solace in the teachings of Cheng Huan and finds peace in his death.
The film is a powerful story of love, violence, and redemption, and ultimately shows the power of compassion and understanding in a world of hatred and prejudice.
