Synopsis – What to Expect from “Brokedown Palace”
Brokedown Palace is a 1999 American drama film directed by Jonathan Kaplan and starring Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale as two best friends who are sentenced to 33 years in a Thai prison for drug smuggling.
Alice (Claire Danes) and Darlene (Kate Beckinsale) are two best friends who decide to take a vacation to Thailand after graduating high school. After arriving in Bangkok, they meet a charming Australian named Nick (Daniel Lapaine) who invites them to a party. At the party, Nick offers them the opportunity to make some easy money by smuggling a bag of what they believe to be diamonds out of Thailand.
The girls agree, but when they arrive at the airport to leave the country, they are arrested by the police for drug smuggling. They are then sentenced to 33 years in a Thai prison.
Alice and Darlene must now find a way to survive the harsh conditions in the prison and prove their innocence. With the help of a fellow inmate, they manage to get a message to the American Embassy. The Embassy sends an investigator to look into their case, but he is unable to find any evidence of their innocence.
Desperate, Alice and Darlene turn to a shady American lawyer named Hank (Bill Pullman) who promises to get them out of prison if they pay him a large fee. With the help of Hank, the girls are eventually able to prove their innocence and are released from prison.
