Synopsis – What to Expect from “Born Yesterday”
Born Yesterday is a 1950 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by George Cukor and starring Judy Holliday, Broderick Crawford, and William Holden.
The film follows the story of Billie Dawn, a brash, uneducated showgirl who is the kept woman of corrupt millionaire Harry Brock. When Harry decides to enter politics, he hires journalist Paul Verrell to educate Billie on the finer points of culture and etiquette. As Billie learns more about the world around her, she begins to develop her own opinions and ideals, and eventually falls in love with Paul.
The film opens with Billie and Harry arriving in Washington D.C. to meet with a senator in an effort to gain favor for a business deal. Billie is presented as an uncultured, uneducated woman who speaks in a loud, brash manner. After the meeting, Harry hires Paul to give Billie lessons in culture and etiquette. Paul is initially hesitant, but eventually agrees.
Over the course of the film, Paul and Billie’s relationship develops as Billie begins to learn more about the world around her. She starts to develop her own opinions and ideals, and eventually falls in love with Paul. Harry, however, is unaware of the romantic relationship between the two, and is instead focused on using Billie to further his political ambitions.
