Synopsis – What to Expect from “Blue Hawaii”
Blue Hawaii, released in 1961, is a romantic comedy set in the beautiful Hawaiian islands. The main character, Chad Gates (Elvis Presley), is a young man who has recently returned to Hawaii after serving in the army. Chad’s parents want him to work in the family business, but Chad is more interested in pursuing a career in the tourism industry.
Chad soon meets Maile Duval (Joan Blackman), an attractive young woman who works for a local tour company. Chad and Maile quickly become close, and Chad soon finds himself falling in love with her.
Meanwhile, Chad’s parents are trying to get him to take over the family business, which is in financial trouble. Chad’s father, Mr. Gates (Angus Scrimm), is determined to make Chad take over the business, even if it means getting rid of Maile.
As Chad and Maile’s relationship grows, Chad’s parents become increasingly hostile towards her. Chad must decide between his love for Maile and his duty to his family.
The movie culminates with Chad and Maile’s wedding, where Chad’s parents finally accept Maile as part of the family. The movie ends with Chad and Maile happily living in Hawaii and working in the tourism industry.
