Synopsis – What to Expect from “Blackbeard’s Ghost”
Blackbeard’s Ghost is a 1968 comedy fantasy film directed by Robert Stevenson and starring Peter Ustinov, Dean Jones, Suzanne Pleshette, and Elsa Lanchester. It follows the ghost of the infamous pirate Blackbeard, who is cursed to remain on Earth until he performs a good deed.
The film opens with the ghost of Blackbeard (Ustinov) visiting a tavern in the small town of Godolphin, Massachusetts. He meets a young man named Steve Walker (Jones), who is the coach of the local college’s track team. After an argument with the tavern’s owner, Blackbeard is forced to leave and takes refuge in the college gymnasium.
Steve is intrigued by Blackbeard and agrees to help him find a way to break the curse and return to the afterlife. Blackbeard reveals that he must perform a good deed in order to be freed, but he is unable to find one. Steve suggests that he help the track team win their upcoming meet, and Blackbeard agrees.
Using his supernatural powers, Blackbeard helps the team to victory. However, the victory is short-lived, as the evil college dean (Lanchester) has her own plans for the team. She wants to use the team to make money and is willing to do whatever it takes to win.
With the help of Steve and his friend, the college librarian (Pleshette), Blackbeard must find a way to defeat the dean
