Synopsis/Plot
Black Mass is a 2015 American biographical crime drama film directed by Scott Cooper and starring Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, and Dakota Johnson. The film is based on the book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob, written by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill.
The film follows the story of infamous Irish-American gangster James “Whitey” Bulger (Depp), the brother of a powerful state senator, who became an informant for the FBI in order to take down a rival Italian-American gang. However, the arrangement soon spirals out of control as Bulger’s power and influence grows, leading to a reign of terror in Boston’s South End.
The film follows the rise and fall of Bulger, as well as the consequences of his actions on the people around him. It is an intense and powerful story of crime and corruption, and the lengths people will go to in order to gain power.
