Synopsis/Plot
Billy Elliot is a 2000 British dance drama film directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Lee Hall. The film follows 11-year-old Billy, who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes. Set in a northern English mining town against the background of the 1984-85 coal miners’ strike, Billy’s journey of self-discovery changes his life and the lives of those around him.
Billy lives with his widowed father, Jackie, his brother Tony, and his grandmother. Jackie is a miner who is on strike, and Tony is training to be a boxer. Billy is sent to the local boxing gym by his father, but discovers a love of dance instead. After secretly attending a ballet class, Billy joins the class and develops a passion for dance.
Billy’s father and brother are initially outraged by his involvement in the traditionally female art form, but eventually come to accept it. Billy’s dance teacher, Mrs. Wilkinson, recognizes his talent and encourages him to audition for the Royal Ballet School in London. Despite his family’s financial struggles, Jackie and Tony find a way to make it happen.
At the audition, Billy impresses the judges with his skill and passion. He is accepted into the school
