Synopsis – What to Expect from “Beyond Rangoon”
Beyond Rangoon is a 1995 drama-thriller directed by John Boorman, starring Patricia Arquette, U Aung Ko, and Frances McDormand.
The story follows Laura Bowman (Patricia Arquette), an American tourist who travels to Burma (now Myanmar) in 1988, a few months after the military coup that overthrew the country’s democratic government. While on a sightseeing tour, Laura’s bus is attacked by a group of rebels, and she is taken hostage. After being rescued by Aung Ko (U Aung Ko), a Burmese doctor, she decides to stay in the country and explore its culture and history.
Laura and Aung Ko travel to a remote village, where they witness the brutality of the military regime firsthand. They are eventually arrested and sent to a prison camp, where they are subjected to torture and deprivation. Laura’s spirit is broken, but Aung Ko helps her to find the courage to resist and to fight back against the oppressive regime.
In the end, Laura and Aung Ko manage to escape the camp and make their way back to the United States, where they continue to fight for the freedom of the Burmese people. The film ends with a message of hope, as Laura and Aung Ko are reunited with their families and the Burmese people are inspired to continue the fight for democracy.
