Synopsis – What to Expect from “Better Than Chocolate”
Better Than Chocolate is a 1999 Canadian romantic comedy-drama film directed by Anne Wheeler. The film follows Maggie (Karyn Dwyer), a young woman who moves to Vancouver and discovers her newfound freedom when she falls in love with a woman named Kim (Christina Cox).
Maggie is a young woman from a small town in Ontario who moves to Vancouver to start a new life. She soon moves in with her brother, who is a student at the University of British Columbia. While at a local bookstore, Maggie meets Kim, a beautiful woman who works at the store. Maggie is immediately attracted to Kim, and the two begin a romantic relationship.
Meanwhile, Maggie’s brother is struggling financially and needs to make money to pay his rent. He decides to rent out the spare room in his apartment to a woman named Judy (Anne-Marie MacDonald), who turns out to be a prostitute. Maggie is initially shocked by this, but eventually comes to accept Judy as a friend.
Maggie and Kim’s relationship begins to blossom, but they soon face opposition from Maggie’s conservative mother, who is appalled by her daughter’s lesbian relationship. Maggie’s mother tries to break them up by sending Maggie to a Christian counseling center, but Maggie refuses to go and stands up for her relationship with Kim.
